Conquer  The Holiday Blues

11/3/2019

For some, saying Merry Christmas 54 days early is overwhelming. However, my soul is ready to celebrate the reason for the season, so let me be the first to wish you a very Merry Christmas.  God has been good to me and if you are reading this that means He has been good to you too. Even when life does not go the way we intended, Jesus is always working everything we go through for our good. I might not be where I think I should be or have accomplished everything on my 2019 to-do list but I am still here. That alone warrants a celebration. Life can be sweet if we enjoy and focus on the simple things and avoid making life harder than it has to be.

My prayer this holiday season is for each of you to remember the reason for the season. Give your thoughts, intentions and decisions purpose all season long.

Many times, people find themselves with the Holiday blues. If that’s you or someone you know, I want to encourage your heart this morning. Let this year be the year you control your emotions, thoughts, intentions and actions. Here are a few tips to overcome the holiday blues:

  1. Resist the temptation to isolate yourself. Make plans to move around even if its short excursions to your favorite coffee shop, movie, vacation, a long drive or to the makeup counter. I don’t know about you but playing in makeup and indulging in a holiday flavored cup of joe makes me smile just a little bigger. Oh, and don’t forget the eggnog and yes, it’s in your local grocer.  Whatever makes you happy – Do it.

  1. If you suffer with loneliness find a cause volunteer your time, visit the elders, family or friends. You might feel along but you are never truly alone unless you choose to be. Filling your space with loved ones is a great way to occupy your time, thoughts and emotions. There is always a cause greater than yourself where you can make a difference. Annually, it’s my mission to be a blessing for less fortunate families in my community. It’s my way of giving back and taking my mind off the fact that another year has passed, and I am still SINGLE (Shocked? Me too LOL). We all have a something to be down about. However, we all have choices. Make a choice to overcome this holiday season. Be proactive and make this the best holiday season ever.

  1. Missing loved ones. The holidays always seem harder when loved ones are no longer with us. For a long time, Christmas was not the same after losing my grandmother.  Christmas was her favorite holiday. It was hard a first. Over the years it got easier. As an adult I choose to honor her by making sure the family gathers around good food, good times, and good laughs making good memories. It helps to know her legacy lives through me. Make a decision how you will honor those you love. Make a toast, post their picture, light a candle, make a donation to a charity they loved in their honor, play their favorite holiday music, make their favorite dish etc. And if it’s still too hard, make sure you see a professional grief counselor. Processing grief looks differently for everyone. I pray, this season will bring joy and peace to all who have lost loved ones.

  1. Other Activities and Tips: Eat Well. Drink Well. Exercise. Decorate your home (that’s huge). Enjoy a glass of eggnog. Go to a play or movie. Treat yourself to a spa day. Travel. Go see family you haven’t seen in a while. Forgive yourself and others. Love yourself deeper. Dress well, keep your appearance up – when you look good you feel good (It’s true). Above all, keep moving, pray and seek help if the blues get to heavy.

Today, I invite you to be a part of my holiday mission. Normally my organization hosts a holiday party to raise money for our holiday charity event. This year, we are asking you make a donation to help support 10 to 15 less fortunate families this holiday season. With your support together, we can make it happen. Consider making a tax-deductible donation of any amount today. Proceeds will go toward providing needed items to families with children this holiday season. Thank you in advance for your support.

Happy Holidays to all,

Lady Kay
